Help shoppers choose: conversational product discovery.

Guide uncertain shoppers with useful questions and accurate product information.

Start with the shopping decision.

Product discovery is useful when a shopper needs help narrowing options. Identify a decision your team frequently explains: which size suits a use case, which package includes a needed feature, or which accessory is compatible. Do not add a quiz when a clear product description would solve the problem.

Define the information required for a recommendation. For a bag retailer, that may be intended use, device size and preferred capacity. Ask about the product need, not personal characteristics that do not affect the choice.

Ask a few questions that change the shortlist.

Use a short sequence of meaningful choices. “Is this mainly for daily commuting or short trips?” can narrow the recommendation more naturally than asking shoppers to navigate internal category codes. Explain any technical terms and include an uncertain option.

Show why a product matches the stated need. A recommendation should be understandable: “This option has the compartment size you selected.” If two products both fit, explain the trade-off rather than presenting one as the unquestionable best choice.

Keep product facts connected to a reliable source.

Prices, stock and specifications can change. Use current catalogue information where the integration supports it. If live information is unavailable, link to the product page for confirmation and make that limitation clear.

Do not let an AI assistant invent compatibility, materials or delivery promises. Route unsupported questions to a person. For consequential product claims, preserve the manufacturer’s actual wording and have an appropriate reviewer check the response before publishing.

Let interest become an optional next step.

A shopper may want to visit the product page, compare another option or ask the team a question. Offer these choices without forcing an email capture. If the shopper requests a follow-up, collect the relevant contact information and explain what will happen.

Keep checkout in the established secure checkout process. A conversation can guide the decision without collecting payment card details. If the product is unavailable, offer only alternatives that genuinely match the need and any follow-up the customer chooses.

Measure whether the guidance helped.

Review product-page visits, useful follow-up enquiries and purchases where measurement is available and permitted. Separate chat-assisted purchases from claims that the bot caused the purchase; the shopper may already have intended to buy.

Look for repeated confusion in the conversation. Sometimes the best improvement is a comparison table, clearer size guide or better product page. The assistant should make choosing easier, while giving your team evidence about where the catalogue needs clearer information.
